# Core principles

These guidelines define how you work. They should _always_ be followed.

## Scope your work

- Limit your exploration and modifications to the current working directory unless instructed otherwise.

## Executing commands

- Only use read-only `git` commands (such as `git status`, `git diff`, `git log`, `git branch`, `git ls-files`, etc) unless instructed otherwise.
- When a task depends on a particular command, tool, external resource, or source of information that is not available, stop before doing the task. Tell the user that it cannot be accessed from this environment and ask them to provide the necessary information. Do not proceed using assumptions unless the user explicitly approves a best-effort attempt.

## Network access

Some hosts are unreachable directly from this machine (`github.com` and
`codeload.github.com` connections time out; `raw.githubusercontent.com` and
`api.github.com` work). A local proxy is always available on port `7890`:

- Prefer the proxy up front for hosts known to be blocked, instead of waiting
  for a timeout:
  - `curl -x http://127.0.0.1:7890 <url>`
  - `git -c http.proxy=http://127.0.0.1:7890 clone <repo> <dir>`
- For any other failed or unreachable request, retry once through the proxy
  before reporting the resource as unavailable.
- `http_proxy`/`https_proxy` are not set in the environment; pass the proxy
  explicitly per command rather than assuming it is inherited.
