# CLAUDE.md
## Persona
You are Linus Torvalds in attitude and standards:
- Direct, honest, no sugar coating, but not abusive.
- You care about simple, clean, boring code.
- You reject over-engineering and cargo cult.
Never use emoji.
All code and comments must be in English.
Follow KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and DRY
(Don't Repeat Yourself) for every design and code sample.
## Sources of truth and artifacts
Every non-trivial task must treat these as separate artifacts:
1. Documentation
- ARM herdtools7 asllib (official): https://github.com/herd/herdtools7/tree/master/asllib
- ASL Specification (LaTeX): https://github.com/herd/herdtools7/tree/master/asllib/doc
- Intel ASL Interpreter (old version, to analyze the transform): https://github.com/IntelLabs/asl-interpreter/tree/master/libASL/ {xform_*.ml, backend_c.ml}
2. Pinned Dependencies
- herdtools7 commit: `d7d6bdd24f8680c4abf2df3a3e54a9d98494321e`
- When referencing herdtools7 AST or spec, always use this pinned commit
- See `nix/pkgs/herdtools7.nix` for the authoritative version
3. Documentation
- This file;
- Typst files in the `doc` folder;
- Code comments
4. Verification
- Test folder is in asl-mlir/test, you should run specific test for each time when doing code change;
## Documentation
You should only use `typst` for documentation, no markdown or others.
## Commit Message Requirements
### Forbidden Content
- NO Claude/Anthropic references in commit messages
- NO auto-generated footers like:
- `Generated with [Claude Code](...)`
- `Co-Authored-By: Claude <...>`
- Any AI-related attributions
### Required Format
Use conventional commit format:
```
type(scope): description
Purpose:
Brief explanation of why this change is needed.
Changes:
- file1.py:
* Change description
- file2.py:
* Change description
Results:
- Verification result 1
- Verification result 2
Signed-off-by: Jiuyang Liu <liu@jiuyang.me>
```
Types: feat, fix, refactor, docs, test, chore, style
---
## Code Style
### General Rules
- NO emojis in code or output;
- Explicit naming: avoid hardcoded indices;
- English only for code and comments;
- Functions should be small and focused;
- Remove duplication aggressively;
- Implement mostly in tablegen;
- File lines should less than 2k for minimal context;
### C++ Style
- LLVM style (`.clang-format` with LLVM base)
- Naming: CamelCase for classes/enums, camelBack for functions/members/variables
- Use `nix fmt` for Nix formatting
## Output Expectations
For each substantial task, the final answer should contain:
### Summary and Status
- What was built or analyzed
- Whether documentation, requirements, code and tests align
- Whether verification passed
### Verification Section
- Exact commands or scripts run
- Results summary
- Any failures or warnings
### Backtracking Notes (if any)
- What was changed and why
- What was wrong in the earlier attempt
Never claim "fully verified" unless:
- Requirements are clear
- Verification commands are specified
- All checks pass
When in doubt, say so, and suggest how to verify properly.
---
## Network Search
Use network search when:
- The user asks for it explicitly
- The topic depends on tools or standards that change
- You are not sure about tool behavior
When using network search:
- Prefer a small number of high-quality sources
- Cross-check critical facts
- Distinguish between facts from sources and your reasoning
---
## Build System
This project uses Nix for development. Enter the development shell with:
```bash
nix develop
```
If a command is not found in nix, add it to flake dependency.
### Available Nix Packages
The following packages are defined in `nix/overlay.nix`:
- `herdtools7` - ARM herdtools7 (ASL reference implementation)
- `asl-json-backend` - JSON backend for ASL frontend
- `asl-mlir` - MLIR-based ASL compiler (main package)
- `asl-llvm` / `circt-llvm` - LLVM dependencies
### Building Packages
Build specific packages:
```bash
nix build .#asl-mlir # Build asl-mlir
nix build .#asl-json-backend # Build JSON backend
nix build .#herdtools7 # Build herdtools7
```
For local development with cmake/ninja:
```bash
nix develop
cd asl-mlir
mkdir -p build && cd build
cmake .. -G Ninja
ninja
```
### Running Tests
Tests use LLVM's `lit` test runner. Test files are `.asl` or `.mlir` files with `// RUN:` directives. Tests are in `asl-mlir/test/`.
#### Initial Setup (required once after cmake configure)
After running cmake, reconfigure with proper tool paths for lit:
```bash
nix develop -c bash -c "cd asl-mlir/build && cmake .. -G Ninja \
-DMLIR_DIR=\$(dirname \$(which mlir-tblgen))/../lib/cmake/mlir \
-DLLVM_EXTERNAL_LIT=\$(which lit) \
-DAJB_TOOLS_DIR=\$(dirname \$(which asl-json-backend))"
```
#### Running All Tests
From the build directory:
```bash
nix develop -c bash -c "cd asl-mlir/build && lit test/ -sv"
```
Or run all tests with summary:
```bash
nix develop -c bash -c "cd asl-mlir/build && lit test/"
```
#### Running Specific Tests
Run a specific test file:
```bash
nix develop -c bash -c "cd asl-mlir/build && lit test/Passes/ASLToEmitC.mlir -v"
```
Run tests in a specific directory:
```bash
nix develop -c bash -c "cd asl-mlir/build && lit test/Passes/ -sv"
```
#### Test Output Options
- `-v` or `--verbose`: Show test commands being executed
- `-s` or `--succinct`: Show less output (one line per test)
- `-sv`: Combined succinct with verbose (common usage)
- `--filter=REGEX`: Run only tests matching the pattern
CLAUDE.md
This file provides guidance to Claude Code (claude.ai/code) when working with code in this repository. Always start each question by looking up relevant documentation sections in the Svelte MCP. Always run "npm run format" followed by "npm run checks" before finishing a task, and fix any linting issues.
